Our FAVORITE time of the year! CHRISTMAS! The last month of the year is always a delight as we spend an amazing weekend in Tomball for their Texas Style, Weihnachtsmarkt! Rated one of the best in Texas, this German Christmas market is sure to please every shopper from near and far.
Tomball, TX is an interesting little city, conveniently located approximately 40 miles Northeast of Houston. Its initial settlement began in the early 19th century, offering open and fertile land perfect for farming and raising cattle. A lush forest area around Spring Creek, which reminded the German settlers of the “Black Forest” back home, gave them an opportunity to thrive in the lumber business as well. More and more German settlers moved to the area as a result and a little German Texan town was born.
The city of Tomball has continued to grow and prosper over the years and keeps its history alive with various events throughout the year such as the Tomball German Heritage Festival in the spring and the authentic German Christmas market each December. The beauty of downtown has retained many of the original structures from the turn of the century and the residents and merchants take pride in their stores along the main streets of the old town area.
The Tomball German Christmas Market is an annual event that begins today Dec 9 and runs through Sunday Dec 11. It is hosted and produced by the “Tomball Sister City Organization” with Grady Martin serving as president. The festival spans several city blocks in the historic downtown area and boasts over 150 merchandise and food vendors in addition to the local brick and mortar businesses in the area. Bring your Christmas shopping list and find some of the most unique items around.
You will find entertainment at every turn with three stages offering an assortment of fun from authentic German music to folk dance troupes to the Carrillon Bell Choir. Tables and chairs surround each stage to give your family a chance to sit and enjoy your favorite beverage or meal while enjoying the music and dance. There is always plenty of cold beer (bier) but many enjoy the seasonal German tradition of Gluhwein, a warm mulled wine during this time of year. The Kinderfest (kids area) will keep the little ones busy with various activities and you can also enjoy the strolling entertainers throughout the festival grounds.
Christmas is always the most wonderful of the year and we love that we get to spend a portion of it in Tomball. Come join us for a fun filled weekend of food, shopping and entertainment. Our booth which we share with our sister company, Texas Slavic and German Warehouse (TSG Warehouse), is located on Market Street across from Granny's Corner and the Tomball Community Center. Merry Christmas! Frohe Weihnachten!
